Yes, Mother’s Day was yesterday. So, just like the kudos our mothers deserve more of, this article is slightly belated. But in the same way that moms never take a day off, neither does Vancouver Tech Journal. We’ve collected reflections on what life is like for women in the B.C. tech community who are building both businesses and families, and their advice on how budding entrepreneurs can juggle both. Here’s what they said:

Anna Sainsbury, CEO, chairman, and co-founder, GeoComply

Sainsbury helms the local unicorn Geocomply: a company that develops geolocation compliance, fraud prevention, and cybersecurity solutions.

‘I think so,’ she answered when we asked about whether entrepreneurship is in her kids’ future. ‘They have their passion projects, right? And a lot of it is what the younger generation is frequently talking about now: that's saving the world from the drain we are on the environment around us. Or, saving animals from extinction. My kids are definitely in that camp and I love it. Young people are so motivated to change the status quo. We need that.’

Brianna Blaney, founder and managing partner, Envol Strategies

In addition to the HR services outfit, Blaney is the co-founder and CEO of Pocketed.

Maternity leave looks different when you’re a co-founder of a high-growth startup. For me, it has looked like bouncing my son in his bouncy chair with my foot during investor meetings, nursing during pitch competitions, and holding him onstage during panel discussions. Parenting and building a business is a constant juggle.
